On November 1, 2005, Tongji University and J. F. Oberlin University signed the agreement to establish J. F. Oberlin University Confucius Institute and which officially opened on 1 April, 2006. The Institute is located at J. F. Oberlin University, regular teaching activities include: special Chinese language in the line with degree education, Chinese language and culture courses for the community, Chinese language training courses for the enterprises, Chinese language experience courses for high school students, etc. In addition, The Confucius Institute holds a series of Chinese language and culture promotion activities such as, Chinese Karaoke Competition, East Japan trial for “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition, spring festival entertainment, Chinese square, Sino-Japanese traditional culture exchange lectures, Chinese drama performances, Chinese culture experience activities, etc. Besides, J. F. Oberlin University Confucius Institute carries out the teachers localization training program, holds the lectures delivered by well-known scholars, and organizes the annual academic publication, Chinese and Chinese Language Teaching Research, etc.
At the end of 2010, J. F. Oberlin University Confucius Institute was awarded “Excellent Confucius Institute” by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters).
