The Rules and Regulations for Regular (four-year)

Students Majoring in Chinese Language


Based on The Rules and Regulations for the College Studentsissued by the Ministry of Education and (The Order No.21 of the Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of China), combined with the Regulations for the International Students of Tongji University, the following items have been made.

Registration

1. The regular students should be registered with Admission Notice and JW201 Form or JW202 Form in the Schedule time. If they can not be registered on time, they have to contact the International Student Office of Tongji University and the International School of Tongji University in advance and present the reasons to obtain the permission. They are not allowed to be registered without permission or exceeding time limit.

2. The freshman must have further check for his/her health condition after their coming to Tongji. He/She will leave the school if his/her health condition is not qualified.

3. The regular student should be registered and pay the tuition fee with his/her Student ID in the schedule time when the new semester starts. If not, he/she has to ask for a leave no more than two weeks from the first day of a new semester. If he/she comes to the school within two weeks without permission, they will be regarded as the absence from class. If the duration of his/her absence from class is over two weeks, they will be regarded as the dropouts.

School System

4. The normal duration of school system for majoring in Chinese Language is 4 years. The credit system will go through the 4 years. If the student can not complete the study within the normal duration, he/she could apply for no more than two years extension including the period of suspension of schooling. If anybody can not complete the study within the extension limit, he/she will be treated as leaving the school.

The student should pay the tuition fee for the period of extension. If he/she wants to extend his/her study in the school, they must fill in the application form to apply for that in the last semester of the normal duration.

5. The regular student could apply for the graduation ahead of normal duration of school system if he/she completes the necessary courses for four years and his/her GPA is over 3 . Any student who graduated ahead of normal duration of school system has to pay 4 years tuition fee.

Asking for Leave, Checking Attendance and Admonition


6.  Students are expected to conscientiously abide by the academic rules and required to ask for leave for personal reasons. The student, who misses class without permission or is late for more than 15 minutes, will be regarded as being absent.

 Asking for a leave of one day could be raised orally to the teacher in charge of class; a leave of more than two days should be in written application; a leave of three to seven days has to be approved by the International School with the teachers permission. A leave of more than seven days will be reported to the International Students Office of Tongji University with the International Schools approval. For sick leave, the verified document issued by the hospital should be presented.

7. The regular student is required to attend the classes for studying necessary and selected courses and participate in the other teaching activities. If any student who gets sick or has personal reasons can not attend the classes, he/she has to ask for leave in advance. The student who missed more than 15% of total course hours without any reason, or missed 30% of total course hours (because of sickness, personal reasons, or absence from class) will be not allowed to take the final examination of this course, in which the absence from class is over 15% of total course hours, this course must be retaken (if not, a make-up examination could be applied).

8.Three level of admonition system is practiced:

 Absent for 20 class hours: Level 1 admonition by the International School;

 Absent for 30 class hours: Level 2 admonition by the International School;

 Absent for 40 class hours: Level 3 admonition by the International School;

 Absent for 45 class hours: the International School would report to the International Student Office of Tongji University and the Office would determine the punishment.

Course Exemption

9. If a regular student has some basic knowledge of one course, he/she could make personal application to take the course exemption test and if he/she gets at least 80 scores for the test and meets the corresponding HSK requirements, he/she could apply for the course exemption within the first month of the course.

If the student gets the course exemption permission, he/she is still required to take the final examination of the course for both the course scores and credits. If not, his/her course result will be F (Failure). Those who retake the course could also apply for course exemption.

Assessment

10. The regular student must take the course examination determined by the teaching plan. If they pass, the credits will be obtained; if they fail or miss the final without permission, they will have no credits.

11. According to the teaching plan, the assessment is divided into normal check and general examination. The close test is mainly used in general examination, but open test or oral test can also be used. And the normal check is a kind of comprehensive assessment which is based on students attendance, assignments, tests, and classroom discussions.

12. The academic record of each course is composed of test scores and ordinary achievements. The test scores occupy 80% of the total result (mid-term examination 25% and final examination 55%). And the 20% ordinary achievements include 10% of attendance and 10% of assignments and classroom activities.

13. The test paper, test arrangement, and the criteria of assessment will be unified for the courses with same teaching contents, same teaching requirements, and same teaching hours.

14. The regular student is not allowed to demand the examination ahead of schedule with any reasons. If he/she could not take the examination with a special reason, an application for delayed examination should be raised before the examination. The delayed examination will be arranged by the International School, and the test score will be the real result of the course.

15. The examinee and invigilator must carry out The Discipline of the Examination Room for the Students of Tongji University. If anybody breaks the Discipline of the Examination Room or cheats in the examination, he/she will be given disciplinary measure by the university.

16. Those who failed the examination could apply for a make-up examination. Those who miss the examination without any reason have to retake the course study. Those who can not pass the delayed examination will be not allowed to have the make-up examination, but can retake the course study.

17. The make-up examination will arranged in the first two weeks of the following new semester. If you can pass, the result will be D (pass) with 2 quality point.

You only have one chance of taking the make-up examination.

18. If you fail the exams or are not qualified to take the exams, you can apply for the course to be retaken, which should be paid in accordance with the credits. The results and the times of the courses being retaken will be recorded.

19. Students with 25 credits or more of failing courses will not be able to proceed to the next year of study.

Academic Records

20. The result of course is of the five-grade marking system:

A (Excellent)

B (Good)

C (Intermediate)

D (pass)

F (Failure)

21. Credit is the unit of the quantity of student learning and the GPA is the target of quality of student learning. The relation between Grade and Quality Points is as the following:

Upgrade and Entering a Class According to His/Her Grade

22.Students have to earn the credits for each academic year and obtain the following score for HSK in order to go the next year of study:

 First year to second year: old HSK Level 5 or 210 scores for new HSK Level 4;

 Second year to third year: old HSK Level 6 or 210 scores for new HSK Level 5;

 Third year to fourth year: old HSK Level 7 or 180 scores for new HSK Level 6.

23.For non-regular student in the International School, if his/her Chinese level has reached a certain level, he/she is allowed to join a relative class of our BA Degree Program of Chinese Language (not for 4th-year study) after passing an assessment test.

Requirements:

 For entering the 2nd year study, it needs old HSK Level 5 or 210 scores for new HSK Level 4 and at least one years study or work experience after graduation of a high school;

 For entering the 3rd year study, it needs old HSK Level 6 or 210 scores for new HSK Level 5 and at least two years study or work experience after graduation of a high school.

Suspension of Schooling and Resuming back to School

24. If a regular student has one of the following conditions, he/she should be suspended from school without losing his/her status as a student;

    1.  For health reasons diagnosed by the doctor, the missing classes due to medical treatment and rest are more than 30% of total learning hours of one semester;

    2.  For personal reasons, the missing classes are more than 30% of total learning hours of one semester;

    3.  For the other reasons, the university requires.

25.  Generally speaking, the period of suspension of schooling would be one year, accumulative total would be no more than two years (one could be suspended from school for two years running because of illness and approved by the university).

26. If a regular student has to stop study because of his/her own difficulties which could not meet the requirements of suspension of schooling, he/she could apply for a period of suspension without losing the status as a student, which should approved by the university.

27. When the period of students suspension of schooling runs out, an application for going back to school must be made before a new semester. For those whose suspension of illness, a certificate issued by the hospital should be presented, and the school will arrange a reexamination for them in a named hospital. If his/her health condition is okay, he/she will be allowed to go back to school. If anybody exceeded the time limit and did not apply for that, he/she will be treated as leaving school by him/herself.

Dropping out

28. A regular student will be dropped out if he/she has one of the following conditions:

    1.   No matter of what reasons (including suspension of schooling), the students study length exceeds the time limit of the maximum length of study;

    2.  Accumulative total of failed courses credits would be over 25, including 25;

    3.    No application for going back to school when the period of suspension has run out;

    4.  Ones health condition is not qualified to go back to school after reexamination;

    5.   Suggested by the University to suspend schooling because of health issues, but refused to do so;

    6.   Diagnosed by a designated hospital, ones health condition is not allowed to continue his/her study in the school;

    7.  Personal application for dismissing from school;

    8.  One has not participated in the teaching activities for two consecutive weeks without asking for leave;

    9.   Didnt register on time (excluding those who obtained permission).

       Dismissal due to the above reasons is not a way of punishment.

29. For students leaving school, the International School will write a report to the International Student Office and the Academic Affairs Department of the university to be approved. If so, the student status will be cancelled and a notice of leaving school will be issued by the university.

30. For those who will leave school, they should deal with the necessary procedures in two weeks when they get the notice.


Punishment

31. For those students who violate the rules and regulations set by the university, criticism or punishment will be given by the International School in accordance with what he/she did and his/her attitude.

 There are five measures for punishment:

  1.  Warning

 b) Serious warning

  1.  Demerit on students record

  2.  Surveillance

  3.  To be dismissed


Graduation, Completion of Study, and None Completion of Study

32. A regular student will be graduated and issued a Certificate of Graduation if he/she successfully completes all courses in accordance with the teaching plan, obtains necessary credits, and pass old HSK Level 8 or get 180 scores for new HSK Level 6 (and gets at least 60 scores for each section).

33. A regular student will be issued a Certificate of Completion of Study if he/she obtains over 90% (including 90%) of credits during his/her four years study and does not plan to continue their study.

34. A regular student will be issued a Certificate of Course of Study if he/she has studied for one year or more but could no meet the requirements of getting a Certificate of Completion of Study.

35. If the Certificate of Graduation, Certificate of Completion of Study, or Certificate of Course of Study has been lost, it will not be reissued. If the student applies for that, a correspondent certificate could be made.

36. For those who got the Certificate of Completion of Study, if they had no absence from the finals, no cheating in their tests during the period of study, they could apply for going back to school within 6 years from the first date of their entry in the school. If they get the university approval, they are allowed to continue their course study. When they obtain enough credits and their Chinese proficiency meets the requirements for graduation, they could apply for a new Certificate of Graduation with a new date issued instead of the Certificate of Completion of study. If they can meet the requirements for BA Degree, they could also apply for that.

BA Degree Awarded

37. Three conditions for BA Degree awarded;

    1.  Obtained enough credits in the period limit and reached the requirements of BA Degree training program;

    2.  GPA is 2.5 or above;

    3.  Old HSK Level 8 or 180 scores for new HSK Level 6 (and gets at least 60 scores for each section).

38. No BA Degree awarded for the following reasons;

  1. During the period of study, a disciplinary punishment was given(a demerit recorded and above);

  2. During the period of study, an administrative disciplinary measure was given (twice and more);

  3. During the period of study, an administrative punishment of detention was given, or criminal offense was recorded.
